Now that we’re done with the major renovations in the bonus room, I wanted to add a few DIY floating shelves around the flat screen. This wall is a little over 17ft long, which meant I couldn’t go with any wimpy looking shelving. Once again, I had to search through my trusty Pinterest until I found something that I could build easily and inexpensively.

Shanty2Chic had a pin that was exactly what I had in mind; big and chunky shelving that was easy to make without costing a fortune. I even love the stain color. They have great step-by-step directions to build the shelves here: Floating Shelves

These shelves look amazing with a few 2×4’s and some plywood.  Seems easy enough for me, so I went to the store and got my wood.  Dad and I put them together fairly quickly and I started to think I could possibly hang these all over the house. The powder room could use some, a blank wall in the hall could use some, the dining room could use some. See where I’m going with this??? Shelf obsessed!

We made a run to Home Depot and got our wood supply. All of the cuts for the E brackets were basic and took less than 30 mins to complete for six shelves. Super easy!  These are the shelf supports that attach to the wall. This is what makes them DIY floating shelves!   DIY Floating Shelves | Media Shelves | DIY FLoating Shelf | Room Makeover | DIY Projects

After making the supports, we moved on to the actual shelves.

Assembly

Assembling the shelves with our trusty Kreg Jig took a little longer, but we completed all of them within about 2-3 hours. These are going to be super chunky and sturdy.

All of the shelves were moved up to the bonus room and we were ready to start hanging them.  I have some idea where I want them, but I have to make a flat screen template and measure out where I sort of think they will look good.

Hanging the floating shelves ended up being pretty easy once I figured out where. Your level is going to be your best friend during this project. We don’t want leaning shelves…not cute!

The fake TV worked well because I realized that I might need another small shelf below it to hold the cable box. That’s why the blue tape line is there. BTW, my T-square says that my measuring skills are drastically improving. 🙂

After I get the shelves hung, we’ll go back and put a thin piece of plywood on the bottom to completely hide the E-brace.

I can’t believe this only took us a day to make these shelves. If I had tried to buy something similar it would have cost me $100’s of dollars. Now that they are in the right place, it’s time to get some stain on them. This is the same stain used by Shanty2Chic called Carrington.  It happens to match my Cocoa Walnut floors. Yes, we installed those floors and you can read more about it here.

Finished

I actually removed the shelves and stained them in the garage.  If you are really good with painters tape, you might be able to stain your DIY floating shelves on the wall.  With my new laminate floors underneath, I decided to not take any chances.

This was a quick and simple carpentry project. All straight cuts and easy assembly with a Kreg Jig. I love projects that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye and allow for lots of functionality. You can easily customize the length, width and color of the shelves to fit any space.

  1. Hello, I love the shelves but also really like the curtains that are in the pic! Could you please tell me where they were purchased? They’d really complete the room. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

    • Thank you for your kind words and thanks for checking out my blog! I hope you do try this project because was very easy and I’m a novice.

    • Hi Margaret! Thanks for checking out my blog. Yes, I do have final pics and I need to get those posted ASAP. I’ll try to write up a post with the pics in the next couple of days.

    • Hi Ajay! Thanks for commenting on my blog! So, back then I didn’t know about those brackets, but I do now. Since these were really chunky, I think it worked out perfectly. However, I am using the brackets you suggested in my laundry room with stained 2×10’s. It’s so ironic that you mentioned these because they were literally just delivered about two days ago. The exact same ones….no kidding! 🙂 Thanks so much for your suggestion and I welcome any others you might have.

  3. Hi there! Are you able to post a picture of the final project with the TV? I am thinking of doing something similar in my living room! Thanks for the inspo!!!
