You know when you get to a point in time and wonder what the heck have you gotten yourself into???  Well, I’m there……right now!!! OMG…what have I done to my house? I’ve convinced my dad into doing this crazy makeover and now we’ve gone past the point of no return.  The Pinterest poltergeist took over my body and ripped out all the baseboards and carpets when we were supposed to be focused on the crown molding project at hand!!!  IMG_6797

Yes, here is what I woke up to when I came out of my trance.  Yeah, you see that below???? It’s not good, not good at all.  I don’t really remember saying I wanted to change the baseboards in my original makeover plan.  There are a few thoughts I can recall while standing on the ladder and installing the furring strips where I noticed how the wimpy and worn baseboards would not compliment my new crown molding.  After that, we’ll assume this is when I had the outer body experience and somehow ended up with a crow bar and razor blade.  Sounds like the makings for a really good horror movie.

Baseboard removal

We’ll leave that mess for another day and focus on my new molding.  I watched video after video to try and figure out the correct way to cut this stuff.  Dad left it to me to study up on. Uh oh, really???  This is when all my friends who read this are saying, uh-oh too.  That’s ok, Dad has lots of faith in my abilities.  Thanks, Dad!

So, I spent a few hours on my Ipad, standing in the room of rubble flipping a piece of crown molding every which way trying to figure out right side up, upside down, right inside corner, left outside corner, left inside corner, right outside corner, and who’s on first. LOL!!!  Luckily, my Kregg molding tool came in really handy and we measured and started cutting.

To my surprise, I cut almost every corner correctly. YAY!!!!  There was a whole lot of “rolling” the molding to get snug fits in the corners and I have a few more seems than a professional would, but I think it turned out better than I exepected.  Oh, the nail gun is an amazing tool.  Please don’t try to do this project without it.

Here is my scaled down version of the extensive dream molding I started out wanting, but was quickly nixed by The Dream Killer (my budget).

This piece of crown molding was just “okay” on its own, but I really wanted a more substantial look.  After looking at a few ideas on Pinterest, I found something that might work.  All I needed to do was add a thin strip of molding a few inches below the other piece and fill in the space with white paint for the illusion of more molding.  My budget agreed and here is what it looks like with the extra piece.

Beefed up Crown Molding

Notice those tight fitting outside corners….kudos to us.  I can’t wait to paint, but I’m more bothered by how dark the room seems now.  In 15 years,  it never really bothered me having one central light in the ceiling fan, but I guess the Pinterest poltergeist isn’t having it. Time to figure out a new lighting situation before my head starts spinning around.  For more crown molding and baseboard ideas,  check out my Pinterest boards: Crown Molding and Wood Trim
