It’s the beginning of Spring and many new projects. One of those projects is a small bedroom makeover. This space was the old office, but we’ve moved the office to the recently renovated bonus room. Check out the bonus room makeover here.  I could date this room back to the dark ages with it’s pink carpet and horrendous wallpaper, topped off with a glaring red ceiling fan.  It was bad, really bad.  The plan is to move this room into the 21st century and make it nice and cozy for my guests and my mini me, Britt.  She’ll probably get more use out of it than anyone, so I’ll design this small bedroom makeover with her in mind.

Bedroom Makeover - An easy update with paint, new flooring and wood trim that you can DIY on a budget.

Here is the bedroom as is.  I use it for storage and crafts mostly.  You’ll notice the beautiful duck wall paper boarder in emerald green and maroon, which were THE colors of the 80’s and early 90’s. Don’t you love how we accented the room with the bright red fan…nice POP of color. Oh, and I particularly love the popcorn ceiling! On top of that, we managed to squeeze three humongous desk units into this little bitty space. It was a decorators gem!

There it is….the PINK CARPET! Yes, it is really pink and it was all over the house.  Now it just resides in this and one other room. Thank goodness! I’m ripping this out and removing the wallpaper and popcorn ceiling. I also have to figure out how to get these desks out of this room and down the steps. So much to do!

Here’s a view of the left side of the room and two other large pieces of furniture. This is my grandmother’s dining hutch and next to it is a five drawer lateral file. On the back wall is where the TV used to live. Now it’s just the stand and a nicely pink-matted frame of the city.

I’m not sure how we ever stuffed all this furniture into this bedroom. The space looks ridiculously small and dingy. I can’t wait to clear it all out!

Small Bedroom Makeover Project Start

There are so many things to do in this old 11×14 space and I think I need to list it out:

  • Remove the wallpaper
  • Pull up 30 year old carpet and padding (Gross!)
  • Quiet the squeaky subfloor
  • Remove popcorn ceiling
  • Remove old closet shelving
  • Skim the ceiling and walls, caulk and puddy windows and door frames
  • Sand ceiling and walls
  • Remove baseboards
  • Remove doors and hardware
  • Paint the entire room including the ceiling, windows and doors
  • Add wood trim
  • Replace door and window hardware
  • Install new floors and new baseboards
  • Install new window blinds and curtain panels
  • Install new closet organization system
  • Install new ceiling fan
  • Buy furniture and decor

Oh my, that’s an extensive list.  Looks like I’m going to need my in house contractor and a few other helpers to get this going. Any volunteers??? You may as well raise your hand or I’m going to come searching for you and it won’t be pretty.

Inspiration Ideas

Of course, I’ve been perusing through Pinterest for a little guest bedroom inspiration and a few ideas have caught my eye. One especially is a statement ceiling with dark paint.  For some reason, this idea is really speaking to me and I want to try it out in this room.  These are my favorite inspo rooms from Pinterest that I would like to incorporate into this space in some form or fashion.

Dark Ceiling

I never considered a dark ceiling until I saw these inspiration pics. Love it!Dark painted ceilings - Make your ceiling a feature in the room.

People seem to lean towards color on the walls rather than the ceiling, but I think I like it flipped. Why not throw a little color on the ceiling to draw the eye up, especially in a room that might not have lots of design aesthetic otherwise. I’m going to give it a try and maybe you might give it some thought after you see my small bedroom makeover. Stay tuned!
