This room has come a long way since we started this DIY bedroom makeover and the previous stage, updating the ceiling, turned out so well that I’m super excited to get started on installing floors. At times it seems that not much is getting done, but when you add it all up…WHOA! Up until this point, we’ve removed wallpaper, scraped popcorn off the ceilings, removed carpet, fixed squeaky subfloor, removed baseboards, patched drywall, added wood trim, painted the ceiling dark, and painted the walls white. That’s a lot, but it’s a little easier if you break it up in stages. These DIY projects can seem overwhelming if you only look at the big picture.

This is my 2nd time installing laminate floors and it’s not nearly as scary as the first time. I’ve decided to go with Select Surfaces from Sam’s Club, but I’m going with Silver Oak this time. Yes, I know it’s a faux pas to have different flooring, but I don’t care. They discontinued the color I used in the bonus room makeover and I really liked the new Silver Oak color. Don’t tell the DIY police. 🙂

Spacers are key when installing laminate to make sure the floor has room to expand. I probably go a bit overboard, but you can’t be too careful.

WOW! It looks amazing and completely transforms the room. I can’t believe that pink carpet stayed around as long as it did. This part was so easy, no joke…you can do this. The door jams can be a little tricky and we had to buy a oscillating tool for that. My next step is to install the baseboards and I have a budget friendly tip for that.

Budget friendly baseboards using plywood and paint.

DIY Baseboards

Baseboard molding can be expensive, but I’ve found a cheap DIY alternative if you like a modern, extra tall, and simple baseboard. My original baseboards were standard wimpy builders grade and I wanted to update those. With a quick trip to Home Depot, I had baseboards for $30. We used a sheet of MDF and had it cut into 6″ strips, then I painted and nailed the boards to the wall. After a bit of caulk and wood putty, it was perfect. Here are a few pics of the finished molding.

It looks like we’ve finished the construction stage of my DIY bedroom makeover! This took us about a month to complete. I know people do these types of projects in a weekend, but that’s not really realistic for me. Most of my projects could not happen without the help of my dad, daughter and a few great friends.

Check back and see the completed room with some of my “decor” touches.

    • Thanks, Paul! Laminate has come a long way and there are so many to choose from. Now I want to change out the floor and baseboards in the entire house. LOL! I can’t stop now.

  1. You go girl…I just finished installing white oak hardwood but I had to hire someone because I don’t have the basic knowledge to attempt it as I’m still very novice in DIYing..although I did just install a toilet thanks to Youtube…but only because I didn’t want to fork over $500..I love the color too..DId you do the same color white for your baseboards, walls and ceiling? I love it and was on the fence of doing the same in my home, what color/brand white is it? it’s a pure white almost like the Benjamin Moore OC-151 which is what I’m sort of leaning towards..I’m not usually a fan of wallpaper, but I like the before look too….
