This small bedroom has really transformed into a beautiful space even without being fully furnished and decorated. From the start, I’ve been thinking about how to layout the room in order to maximize space. The key to this DIY bedroom makeover is room organization and storage. Since my daughter will utilize this space while she finds her own fixer upper, we need a good plan to keep her clothes, accessories and makeup organized.

In my last post about this room makeover we covered the installation of new floors and that’s when I realized how tiny the closet space was. It was tough squishing myself into the back part of this closet to get the flooring down. This has to be the world’s tiniest closet! It’s enough space for maybe a few office supplies or linens, not for a millennial with enough clothes to have her own boutique pop-up shop. I can’t turn water into wine, but I can create a bit more hanging space with a Sunday morning pilgrimage to the 8th wonder of the world, IKEA.

Here is a pic of the closet at the beginning of the renovation:

We didn’t really store much in this closet because the old wire racks were hanging on for dear life. It was really used mostly for junk storage, because 95% of it went in the trash during the remodel.

After taking a few measurements of the closet, we were off to IKEA on an early Saturday morning. While enjoying our $2 breakfast and waiting for the store to open, we made a list of all the items that needed organization in this room. It spanned from eyelashes to shoes. We needed to organize a bunch of stuff in a small space.

This is what we came up with:

  1. Closet Organization System
  2. Shoe/Acessory Storage
  3. Cosmetic Organization
  4. Vanity Space
  5. Jewelry Organization
  6. Clothing

That’s quite a bit in this small room where I also need to fit a queen size bed. It’s a challenge, but I’m sure IKEA can help us with a few ideas.

We discovered the ALGOT closet organization system and I think it will work best for this small closet and the small budget. For accessory storage, the VITTSJÖ shelf unit stood out to us in one of the display areas. the vanity space was a no-brainer because we already have a MALM Dressing Table, but that’s not enough space to store all of her cosmetics and hair products. For that bit of extra storage, I think Lack Wall Shelves on either side of the dressing table would work out well. The last item on our list is a chest of drawers and we both liked the HEMNES 8 drawer dresser. All in all, I think this was a pretty good IKEA haul and we were able to check off everything on the list.

Lucky for me, my brilliant daughter can assemble just about anything. That had to have trickled down from my dad, but it skipped me. I can’t put that stuff together to save my life.

This is what the ALGOT system looked like in our tiny closet. It really maximizes the space and doubled the amount of hanging room that was originally here.

The hanging rack for trousers had to be switched around a little…oops!

The vanity was composed of three IKEA pieces: MALM Dressing Table and two LACK Wall Shelves in white.

I love this VITTSJÖ shelf unit for her accessories. It fits perfectly on the wall with the rest of our awesome IKEA finds.

This room renovation has come so far and I love seeing all the usable space that we’ve re-acquired in the house. The space was a huge eyesore for many, many, many years and now it’s beautiful and livable for my mini-me. Even though the space is small, we’ve managed to accommodate her storage needs until she finds a beautiful home of her own. I can’t wait to start decorating and getting all the accessories…let the fun begin! Stay tuned.
