I mentioned in a previous post about the super huge planters I found in the clearance section at IKEA for $5 a piece. These pots have been seated in the perfect spot on the patio for about three months with nothing in them….UNTIL NOW.  I’m not sure if this line has been discontinued, but I know there were square and round pots available at one time with this design.  I wanted a bit of a modern feel and spotted a few ideas on Pinterest that I wanted to try and semi-replicate.

It wasn’t easy planting those prickly suckers either. Every two seconds I was yelping, until it dawned on me that a tank top was not appropriate attire for planting Yucca.  The adventure to begin planting involved going to several different nurseries to find the plants for $29 each and getting my friend, Barry, to meet me at the landscape supply for a half scoop of garden soil in his pickup truck.  If you can buy dirt and mulch this way, I’d seriously recommend it instead of buying individual bags. Half a cubic yard of garden soil was only $13 and I had enough for 4 huge planters and 3 other flower beds around the yard.

I went with Yucca plants because of their low maintenance needs and heat tolerance.  I’ve planted many, many, many pretty pots full of colorful flowers over the years and spent hours and hours trying to make sure they got enough water.  This year I decided enough was enough with all that watering. Low maintenance plants are my new friends.

I did decide to go with black mulch for the pots and bought one bag of it at Home Depot. No point in getting a whole scoop of that stuff.  I’m glad I won’t have those days of endless watering this summer!!!
